Greetings! I'm Sandra Downs, a travel writer and photographer who loves the open road. I like to take back roads and byways in my travels. Unlike interstate highway travel, you meet people at diners, see great examples of homespun architecture, and smell fresh vegetables growing in the fields. If you can't afford the time to travel an unbeaten path on your next road trip, I've assembled some links to "road trip" travel sites to see what you've been missing. Enjoy the ride!

Roadside America

A fun site put together by folks who chronicle North America's cultural kitsch. View a giant statue of Paul Bunyan! Meet people who build improbable monuments: the Coral Castle, the Beer Can House, and the Nut Museum. You can spend hours at this site checking out some of the silliness rampant along the back roads. You can even search for odd sights to see in your area! If any site gives you an excuse to go on a road trip just for the laughs, this is the one.

A Virtual Road Trip

A showcase for Bill Schwab photography, this site treats visitors to a visual record of Bill's road trips while he works. You can sign up to receive e-mail updates when Bill and the caravan are on the road. The digital photos are stunning, and the prose uplifting. When you've been away from the road too long and miss the feel of the highway, stop by and refresh yourself.

Travels with Samantha

A poignant journey by Phillip Greenspun as he discovers the real face of North America after the loss of his companion. Heavy on prose, plenty of illustrations. A great read.

On the Road to Inuvik

fooHarry Yates travels with his wife through the Yukon and Northwest Territories of Canada. Good journal details and practical information for folks planning to brave the "Great White North."

Planet Texas Road Trip

Take a virtual drive through Texas on this tightly focused, very visual site. Stick your head out the window and take in the view.

Road Trip!

Michael Cox loves baseball. So he found an excuse to get out there, drive from town to town searching for ballparks, and record it all in good taste on his website. He chronicles stadiums and tourist traps alike. Even if you're not a fan, you'll get a kick out of it.

The Great American Road Trip

Fresh from the Virgin Islands, Carolyn hops in a car and heads cross-country. Follow her adventures as she picks up some British passengers and heads for the unknown.

Backroads, Highways, and Biways

The start of something new. Links to road trip travel sites, the beginning of an online road trip newsletter, and information to get your next trip off the ground.

The WWW Speedtrap Registry

If you MUST go fast, this site is for you. It's a year and a half worth of compiled information on speedtraps all over North America, with a few mentions in other parts of the world. Where are those State Police hiding with their radar guns? Find out here!

The Tackiest Place in America Contest

...and I'll wrap up with another site for tacky Americana, with plenty of photos illustrating the kinds of crazy places you'll see if you stray away from the superhighways. Submit your entry of the dumbest, most goofy, silly spot you've ever seen along the highway! My vote: South of the Border, along US 301 near I-95 at the North/South Carolina border
