Princess Diana: Queen of People's Hearts

Host
Sandra L. Toney

The August 31, 1997 accidental death of the Princess of Wales, Diana, shocked and saddened the entire world. True, most of us didn't know her, nor had we even seen her in person. But from the time when she was first linked to Prince Charles, the media gave us a window into her life, perhaps letting us feel as though we knew her.

We recall the milestones in her life: the royal wedding and elegant lifestyle, followed by a somber divorce to the next King of England. And of course, we remember her rare, refreshing beauty, and the legacy left behind: her selfless attempts to try to make the world a better place.

The Internet has been buzzing since this horrible tragedy. Princess Diana websites have popped up around the globe. Photos of her life, as well as photos of the crumpled Mercedes that ended it, are literally thousands of places online. Although there are thousands upon thousands of personal memorial websites to the beloved Princess, the following are more "official" in the coverage of the life, and death, of this one-of-a-kind Lady:

BBC Online's Farewell to Diana

Britain's popular source for news, the BBC, has dedicated a special page to the late Princess which, although now archived on the site without regular updates, is a touching tribute to their country's own golden girl. Besides the full text of Earl Spencer's eulogy to his beloved sister, the BBC site offers many photos of the solemn faces at the Princess' funeral as well as a variety of articles describing the mourning and devastation throughout the world.

The British Monarchy's Diana,
Princess of Wales Official Website

Although the rift between the Royal Family and the woman who divorced the heir to the throne, Prince Charles, the Royals have made every attempt to downplay that rift and have even dedicated a page on the official website for the British Monarchy to the woman who gave birth to the future King of England.

Diana's special page displays a stunning photo of her, as well as the Queen's Message given to the nation after her ex-daughter-in-law's death, a biography of Diana's life, funeral arrangements, the order of her service, and information on the Memorial Fund honoring the Princess.

CNN Interactive's The Death of Princess Diana

CNN is "the" source of news for so many people around the world. Their complete coverage of Diana's death and its aftermath is possibly the best the Internet has to offer. A very complete depiction of the Princess' life, as well as her death, is found at CNN Interactive, including the most up-to-date developments of anything and everything surrounding the ensuing cause of this dramatic piece of history in the making.

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund

For those who wish to donate to this special memorial fund set up to help Diana's favorite charities, you can go to this secure online site and make your donation. Perhaps this is the only worthy thing that has come from her untimely death. She would surely have been proud of this fund for the unfortunate victims she cared so much about.

E! Online's Death of a Princess

E! The Entertainment television station is perhaps one of the more prominent members of the paparazzi accused of causing the fatal accident that took the life of the 36-year-old Princess. They make a living by reporting news about celebrities. But they have a nice web page honoring Diana, including a full video telecast of the funeral itself.

Editorials, articles on the "Stalkerazzi," the latest news on the investigation, a photo gallery, the Elton John lyrics to his rewritten classic, "Candle in the Wind," and an in-depth message board area for discussing the sorrow of the world's loss are all included on this site.

ITN Television's Diana: The Unfolding Tragedy

ITN Television, a popular station in London, devotes a page to Diana: the unfolding tragedy. As a station from Diana's homeland, perhaps the news on this site is more profound because of their close connection to the people of Britain. Such articles as

"The Queen Britain Never Had" to "Is it Time for New Privacy Laws," ITN appears more in sync with Britain's loss of a member of the Royal Family than most other news-type sources, who are focused on the world's loss of an endearing human being.

Lifetime's Intimate Portraits: Princess Diana

Lifetime, known as "television for women," airs a regular series of specials called "Intimate Portrait." Of course, their online site features an intimate portrait of the Princess we all felt we knew "intimately" BECAUSE of the years of press coverage.

It's ironic, however, that we felt we knew her so well because of the countless articles and photos we witnessed since she first became involved with Prince Charles all those years ago. The very same intimacy possibly played a role in her tragic demise -- all for a photo opportunity of the world's most photographed individual.

T.V. Guide's Princess Diana Photo Gallery

Princess Diana has been called the most photographed woman in the world, so it's no wonder that T.V. Guide has a special section on their website dedicated to her called "A Life in Pictures." From a shy schoolgirl to a sad, doe-eyed teen. From a blissful bride to an unhappy, lonely wife. And finally, from an independent single mother to an eerie recent shot with the late Mother Teresa, these photos tell a story worth seeing.

With or without the Internet, the untimely death of Princess Diana will not easily be forgotten. Go online to read about her accomplishments, share your sorrows with other Diana admirers, or just flip through the thousands of pictures of this truly beautiful person, inside AND out, will hopefully grant web-surfers at least a little bit of comfort.

May Diana, the Princess of Wales, rest in peace knowing she was LOVED by so many people -- persons of every social, economic, and cultural background imaginable. That is all she ever really wanted out of life . . .
