Polish Cooking Resources Online

Host
Jan McDaniel
As a second generation Polish-American growing up in 1950s Detroit, I took for granted ethnic
delicacies such as powdered sugar-dredged angel wings (Chrusciki), fresh from the bakery, my mom's
homemade stuffed cabbage, and fresh pierogi from the corner meat market.
Living in the South, the only time I eat Polish food now is when I either visit Detroit or cook it
myself. Good Polish recipes aren't so easy to find, but scouring the Web, I found several
sources.
SOAR--Searchable On-line Archive of Recipes
This recently updated site, run by volunteers who love cooking (and I assume eating) was a joy to
visit and listed a wealth of Polish recipes. To name a few: Easter bread (Babka), sauerkraut
soup, meatballs with sour cream (Klopsk W Smietanie), noodles and cabbage, kolaches with cheese
filling, honey cake (Medianyk), and baked pork chops in sour cream (Wieprzowina w Smietanie).
A word of warning though: this site is no place for the easily distracted. Under holiday recipes,
I found 150 under the heading "Halloween" alone.
Recipes On-Line, Polish Recipes
The second most bountiful site I found, the searchable index here shows a listing of 33 Polish
foods including Christmas pudding, dumplings for stew, Polish-style cabbage rolls, stuffed
mushrooms and a pierogi casserole.
MMMMM-----from Cheshire's Crafts & Cuisine
I liked the recipe for Polish meat loaf I found here, assuming it's okay to substitute Crisco or
margarine for "kidney fat." This site also lists recipes for pierogi and a few other Polish
specialties, but finding them requires knowing what you're looking for--they're mixed in with
numerous entries in a long "other cuisines" index.

Ya Gotta Have It! (sm) Recipes
(Blue Rock Publishing, LLC)
Download free a huge file of Polish recipes. (Recipes from the entire site may be purchased on
CD.) Learn how to prepare: Polish stew (Bigos), angel wings or bow ties (Chrusciki--if you've
ever attended a Polish wedding, you've probably eaten these pastries), duck soup, potato soup,
borscht and more.
Polish Wigilia--Fish in Horseradish Sauce
Edward Chrzanowski shares a treasured family recipe, translated from Polish into English, for the
first of 12 dishes making up the traditional Polish meal eaten after sundown on Christmas Eve.
Only one recipe here, but very rich in history and cultural information.
Christmas Pudding (Kutia)
Rene Gagnaux shares a typical Polish recipe for a festive holiday pudding. I'd be happy to hear
from anyone who knows of additional sites, collects Polish recipes, or simply enjoys the food! E-
